The Hard Old Way!

MELIDONI PROJECT - 'ON THE ROCKS'

Melidoni from the plotFive houses are currently under construction on a 5,000 sq. m. stretch of upland within the boundaries of the village Melidoni.

The project is called “On the Rocks” because when excavations began we came across solid rock wherever we started to break the soil. So, you could be the owner of a house built literally “On the Rocks”!

Our idea was to construct authentic traditional houses that will blend in well beside any older village house, and we believe we have succeeded.

  • Plot Topo

The houses are built to the highest standards and are very robust. We have avoided cost-pruning and corner-cutting at, ultimately, your expense.

You are welcome to view the project at any time, with or without prior notice. Just ask for “the stone houses” at the village coffee-shop.

Eco-friendly Houses

Stone houses are friendly to the environment, keeping cool in summer and warm in winter (provided you know when to close the windows!)

We use locally-quarried stone and Austrian pine from controlled-cutting forests.

Central heating: there is separate autonomous system on each floor for economy

We urge you to:

  • Use a wood-burning stove and your fireplace for maximum output
  • Limit outdoor lighting to the absolutely necessary. You will appreciate the long summer evenings with candle light or solar lanterns
  • Plant local trees and shrubs (olives, cypress, carob) to conserve water
  • Create a rock garden from local flora

ALL HOUSES HAVE BREATHTAKING VIEWS

Panoramic all-round views towards:

  • Mount Psiloritis (Ida) far to the east
  • The highest peaks of the White Mountains to the south
  • The Aegean Sea in two directions – northwards to Kalyves and Souda, northeast towards Georgioupolis and Kavros bay
  • The Apokoronou highland peninsula to the west

Each house has been carefully placed in such a way as to ensure that these views will remain unimpeded even if additional houses are built on neighbouring lands.

MELIDONI - THE VILLAGE

A beautiful tranquil village in the foothills of the White Mountains - 450m height above sea level.

Here there are two sleepy village coffee shops where nothing has changed since the 50’s except the television. The elderly play cards, talk about their sheep, and await their grandchildren to come for the weekend. Old Cretan hospitality is found here.

A new, recommended tavern-restaurant “Kopanistra” is open every evening, offering authentic local cuisine and the best dairy products.

MELIDONI ACTIVITIES

Mountain Climbing & Trekking

Located at an altitude of 450m above sea level, in the 'roots' of the White Mountains, Melidoni and all the scenic routes to Theriso are good starting points for walks or drives to the country chapels like Ag Prevma at 1200m, Ag Pavlos, and Psyhro Pigadi. These are excellent starting points for reaching the highest peaks before sunset.

Cave Exploration

Recently a huge cave complex has been explored by a Greco-French expedition team. There are indications that it is actually much deeper than the 1200m already explored - but no further exploration has taken place this year. It may prove to be the second deepest cavern in the world. Note: cave exploration should be licensed by the local authorities.
